福井 鯖江 Fukui Sabae
A small city in Fukui prefecture makes most of Japan's eyewear, and has done for over a century. Frames there pass through dozens of specialist hands — cutting, curing, polishing, assembly — before they are ever worn.
We visit the workshops, meet the makers, and bring back only the frames we would wear ourselves. No wholesale catalogues. No mass-market lines.
Pure titanium
Light, hypoallergenic and precise — the material Sabae is famous for, cold-forged for strength without weight.
Japanese acetate
Slow-cured cellulose acetate with depth of colour you can't get from injection-moulded plastic.
Hand finishing
Barrel-tumbled and hand-polished over days, so edges sit softly against the skin and hold their lustre.

Eyecare
Eye tests, done properly.
Across Australia, eye tests keep getting shorter. Industry surveys now put the median consultation at 30 minutes and falling, with optometrists increasingly measured on sales conversion instead of care.
MEGANE is independent, so we answer to nobody's sales dashboard. Our optometrist carries no conversion targets, consultations run 45 minutes as standard, and recalls follow clinical need — nothing else. The only KPI in the room is your eyesight.
Care here is tailored, not templated. We test around how you actually use your eyes — screens, night driving, fine work, sport — then walk you through what we found and what it means, in plain language, with time for questions. You leave knowing every option and what each one costs, so the decision is genuinely yours. Sometimes the right answer is new glasses. Sometimes it isn't — and we'll tell you either way.
Members receive annual comprehensive testing, priority appointments and preferred pricing on lenses and frames.

About
MEGANE means glasses.
That's the whole point.
No invented heritage, no borrowed Italian name. めがね is simply the Japanese word for spectacles — and everything we sell is simply, entirely, made in Japan.
MEGANE started with a frustration: the best Japanese frames rarely leave Japan, and when they do, they're marked up and fitted carelessly. We wanted a place in Melbourne where those frames are treated the way they're made — with patience.
So we keep the range small. We travel to Fukui to choose it. We fit every pair in person, and we service what we sell for life. If that sounds slow, it is. Good glasses are slow.
The store opens in August 2026. Eye test bookings are open now, and the first collection is available online.
